The Age of Discovery, also known as the Age of Exploration and the Great Navigations, was a period in history starting in the early 15th century and continuing into the early 17th century during which Europeans engaged in intensive exploration of the world, establishing direct contacts with Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania and mapping the planet. Historians often refer to the 'Age of Discovery' as the pioneer Portuguese and Spanish long-distance maritime travels in search of alternative trade routes to "the Indies", moved by the trade of gold, silver and spices. The Age of Discovery is seen as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern era, along with its contemporary Renaissance movement, triggering the early modern period and the rise of European nation-states. Accounts from distant lands and maps spread with the help of the new printing press fed the rise of humanism and worldly curiosity, ushering in a new age of scientific and intellectual inquiry. European overseas expansion led to the rise of colonial empires, with the contact between the Old and New Worlds producing the Columbian Exchange: a wide transfer of plants, animals, foods, human populations (including slaves), communicable diseases, and culture between the Eastern and Western hemispheres, in one of the most significant global events concerning ecology, agriculture, and culture in history. European exploration spanned until accomplishing the global mapping of the world, resulting in a new world-view and distant civilizations acknowledging each other, reaching the most remote boundaries much later. From Google Video Search: "a discovery" What abstract scientific discovery would lead to the greatest immediate benefit to humanity, and why? Q. Please choose something that would be reasonably attainable, especially within the next 100 years. It could be a new discovery, or a valid theory to describe an existing phenomenon. Also, if you can explain how we would get from the abstract discovery to the practical benefit, you will get extra consideration for the best answer. He was a German physicist who developed a Grand Unification Theory decades ago, but never published it. Only recently has his work made it outside of Germany, and steps are being taken to test his theory. It doesn't have a lot of support, since string theory is very popular nowadays. But string theory has it's problems and doesn't always add up-- Heim's theory, on the other hand, is the only theory capable of predicting the masses of the fundamental particles from first principles, and does so more accurately than string theory can predict those masses even accounting for evidence. Validation of his theory, which could happen by 2010, would open up a whole new realm of research. His theory proposes at… [cont.] Answered by Tim - Sun Jul 23 21:27:01 2006 What will the discovery of the Higgs boson mean for everyone else?
Q. So the Higgs boson may well be discovered. However, it's difficult to imagine that the money spent on the project is in the interest of science alone. What could such a possible discovery mean at an entrepreneurial level? Could this affect technology over time for instance, and if so, how? Basically, how would lay peoples' lives and perhaps means unwittingly change in a world after discovering the Higgs Boson? Asked by - Mon Jan 4 21:23:07 2010 - Astronomy & Space - 2 Answers - Comments A. "entrepreneuria l level"? Oh lord, help us all! Business people know absolutely nothing about the value of science and what actually motivates scientists and researchers. Like religion, business just get in the way of true human progress, in my opinion. Business should stick to what they're supposed to be doing, serving the needs of the people. Business should leave the value of scientific discovery to the scientists. The Higg's boson (or something like it) is an absolutely essential piece of knowledge necessary to complete the Standard Model Of Particle Physics and make complete sense of nature. A completed SMOPP could lead to a TOE or theory of everything (a unification of the four known forces of nature). With a TOE in… [cont.] Answered by Bob D - Mon Jan 4 23:00:30 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "a discovery" |
