A. One reason was that the Spanish got to the New World first. They were the ones with the wealth and the military might to claim all of it and prevent successful encroachment for about a hundred years. Another is the treaty of tordesillas in which the pope divided the world in half, giving one side to Spain (western) and one to Portugal (eastern). Also, the original reason the Portuguese sailed east was to get at the oriental spice trade. The Spanish funded Columbus' rather half baked attempt to sail westward and they got lucky and discovered two other continents instead. Also, your question is somewhat misleading in that the Spanish, dutch, and Portuguese all established colonies in the east and the west. The Portuguese founded Brazil (due… [cont.]
