Nounexplorers
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Exploration is the act of searching or traveling a terrain (including space, see space exploration) for the purpose of discovery of resources or information. Exploration occurs in all non-sessile animal species, including humans. In human history, its peak is seen during the Age of Discovery for Europe's contact with the rest of the world, and Major explorations after the Age of Discovery for scientific exploration in the modern era. Other usesThe term may also be used metaphorically, for example persons may speak of exploring the internet, sexuality, etc. In scientific research, exploration is one of three purposes of empirical research (the other two being description and explanation). Exploration is the attempt to develop an initial, rough understanding of some phenomenon. Notable explorersThe lists in this article may contain items that are not notable, encyclopedic, or helpful. GNU Free Documentation License What could/did the explorers say to avoid death and why? Q. Three explorers were trekking through a remote island off the coast of Costa Rica when a native tribe captured them. The tribal chief gave the explorers an ultimatum that would lead to almost certain death. If the explorers told the truth they would die by poison. If they told a lie they would die by fire. And if they chose not to speak they would die an unfathomable death. What could/did the explorers say to avoid death and why? Asked by Niki - Thu Nov 5 16:38:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. "I will die by fire." If it's true, they must die by poison, but then it will be false, and they must die by fire... If it's false, they must die by fire, but then it will be true, and they must die by poison... The answer generates a paradox, and neither death penalty can be given without breaking the rules. Q. When European explorers were "discovering" new lands, how did they communicate with the natives? I suppose it would be difficult, since the European languages were completely different than what any native has ever heard, and vice-versa. Asked by hawaii86 - Wed Mar 18 21:55:27 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. That's a very good question. I've read that Hernan Cortez found a shipwrecked Spanish sailor who had learned one of the native "Indian" dialects. Cortez also found a woman who could speak that Indian dialect and also the Aztec language. So the Aztecs could speak to her, she could speak to the Spanish sailor, and the sailor could speak to Cortez. In many other cases - such as the French traders in North America or the English in the American colonies, they must have started with a crude sign language until enough time passed for verbal communication to develop.
