Three explorers were trekking through a remote island off the coast of Costa Rica when a native tribe captured them. The tribal chief gave the explorers an ultimatum that would lead to almost certain death. If the explorers told the truth they would die by poison. If they told a lie they would die by fire. I suppose it would be difficult, since the European languages were completely different than what any native has ever heard, and vice-versa. I've read that Hernan Cortez found a shipwrecked Spanish sailor who had learned one of the native "Indian" dialects. Cortez also found a woman who could speak that Indian dialect and also the Aztec language. So the Aztecs could speak to her, she could speak to the Spanish sailor, and the sailor could speak to Cortez. In many other cases - such as the French traders in North America or the English in the American colonies, they must have started with a crude sign language until enough time passed for verbal communication to develop.
